type

newsreader · prose · opsz 6–72 · wght 300–600

Writing that does the homework. Software that keeps the record.

Newsreader, from Production Type, sets everything meant to be read. Its optical-size axis lets a caption and a headline come from one variable file, here self-hosted and trimmed to the characters this site actually uses.

Ioskeley Mono, an open Iosevka build drawn after Berkeley Mono, sets every measured string: dates, counts, labels and specs. Readers with Berkeley Mono installed see the real one.

paper and ink

One warm hue, 40°, runs from the paper to the ink, with three weights of rule between them. Ink is the only accent. In dark mode the paper goes to near-black and the footer band turns to bone, so there is still exactly one reversed band.

the plate

The head on the home page is a marble woman carved in Greece between 300 and 200 BCE, drawn as a survey map of its own light: 120 lines, each following one level of brightness across the stone. Lines run heavier where the marble falls into shadow, every fourth one a little heavier still, and the brightest levels are left as open paper, the way an engraver leaves the highlights. By night the polarity turns: the lit marble takes the ink and the shadows stay open. It is drawn live in WebGL. The levels rise out of the ink when you arrive and drift a moment before they settle; a mouse wakes them and carries a loupe that doubles them; on the way down the page they spread and drop away. Cut down to a few dozen lines, it is the emblem beside the name.

essay marks

Each essay has a figure of its own: chords drawn from point i to point i × m around a circle, with m seeded by the essay’s slug. It closes the essay, stands beside it on the front page and sits on its social card.

build

Vite, React and Tailwind. Every route is prerendered to HTML at build time and hydrated in place, then served by a Cloudflare Worker. Social cards are set by headless Chrome in the site’s own fonts.
